Raised in Richfield, MN, reside in southwest Minneapolis with my wife Lynn (medical technologist),
daughter Rachel (C.P.A.), daughter Lisa (4th year student at University of Wisconsin - Madison),
pet dog Rascal, two cars, and one yellow moped.
I decided to become a dentist at age 11, was a Boy Scout (Eagle scout rank), played baritone
saxophone in my high school marching and swing bands, was a ski jumper on my high school ski
team (tri-captain), was a camp counselor at Camp Kici-Yapi YMCA Day Camp, and worked as an
orderly in hospitals and nursing homes.
I served in the USAF as a dentist at Holloman Air Force Base in New Mexico from 1972-74
(Vietnam era), flew small single-engine airplanes (commercial-instrument license), was a part-time
educator at the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry (Oral Anatomy, Clinical Operative
Dentistry) from 1974-84, went helicopter skiing in Canada, was a founding member and officer of
the Fulton Neighborhood Association in Minneapolis, tried indoor skydiving and ziplining, and was a
girl's softball coach.
I was twice appointed by Governors Jesse Ventura (1999) and Tim Pawlenty (2003) to serve 4-year
terms on the Minnesota Board of Dentistry, am a licensing examiner for the Central Regional Dental
Testing Service (2002-present), and was a member of the men’s alpine course crew at the 2002
Winter Olympics in Salt Lake. Currently, I enjoy ski patrolling at Afton Alps Ski Area (37th year),
sailing my trimaran (Blue Pearl), watching video movies, learning, occasional lecturing and dental
consulting, buying books I really don't have time to read, surfing the web, trying new "foods" at the
Minnesota State Fair, periodic exercising, and especially taking naps.
